I grew up in a small city in Northern Illinois. The city has greater problems than most and this isn’t by opinion, it’s a fact. The city is rated the worst midsize city in the United States based on crime and unemployment rate.

I knew it wasn’t the place for me to live after school. I knew I needed to get out to give my dreams a shot. So I picked Phoenix, Arizona, the hottest damn place I could think of.

Moving across the country is scary. Moving across the country to a city where you don’t know a sole is fucking terrifying. And the crazy part is I would do it time and time again. It has been by far the best decision I ever made.

A clean slate

You really take on a clean start to your life…If that’s what you want. You’re distancing yourself from some of your ‘friends’ that may be toxic or holding you back. And you keep in contact with those close friends that are truly your good friends.

But the best part is you now get to make a whole new group of friends based on who you are today. Not who you were in the 6th grade. It’s important to surround yourself with a strong core group of people, they can drastically alter your life.

You learn a lot about yourself

Putting yourself in a situation where you need to do everything yourself will teach you about yourself real quick. Need to learn to make new friends. Need to learn all the standard household activities. How to get around a random city.

It will truly bring out who you really are. like that deep down to the core you. The part of you that will stay with you forever. The values your partners instilled in you. That shit comes out 10 fold.

Allows you to be who you want to be

One thing that holds us back from doing what we want is what other people will think about us. Well, when you don’t know anyone, no one will give a shit what you do. And guess what, even when you do start to know people, they won’t give a shit either. And the people that do care, your close friends, will support you in whatever it is you’re doing, not judge you.

You get out of those holiday gatherings

Ok, let me explain. I love my family and that was truly the hardest part in moving away. I only see them a couple times a year, but I think it’s brought up closer.

But do you ever have those holidays, like Labor Day, where you have this family get together you never want to attend. Guess what, you never have to again. Now you can go party with your friends or eat Cheetos watching House of Cards (I choose the latter).

You’ve set yourself up to face huge challenges

You have now accomplished one of the hardest things in life. Leaving everything you knew in search for something better. You now know you have the ability to do fucking crazy things and you are 100% capable of pulling it off. Know that you are a badass and did something 99% of this world will never have the courage to do. You can do a lot more than what you might think you’re capable of.

You’ve now set yourself up to move again

You know what it’s like to move to a random city. Now you can move anywhere in the world and you’re just that much more prepared, and that much less scared. I’ve thought about moving to Costa Rica, Mexico, Australia, all because I know I can pull it off and it’s really not scary to me anymore.

Moving away was the best decision I made. It truly changed my life and I can’t wait to do it again.
